It is well known that East Hartford's "front door" is the Connecticut River, and that Great River Park offers exceptional riverfront recreational opportunities. What is not so well known is the beauty and diversity of the Hockanum River Linear Trail. The Hockanum River runs from Vernon and Ellington to the Connecticut River in East Hartford. Along the way it borders meadows, thick forest land, old mills and wetland areas, and includes a wide range of wildlife and habitat. In East Hartford, the existing trail travels about 4.0 miles from the Connecticut River to Hillside Cemetery. Phase III of the project is currently under design and will be constructed next year.
